How to Choose Dental Insurance

When choosing a dental insurance plan, there are several considerations that you should factor into your decision.  You’ll want to consider the price of the plan versus the benefits that you’ll be receiving as well as if the benefits of the plan meet your specific needs.  With so many options for dental plans on the market, the decision making process can sometimes be complex, but it also means that you are more likely to find a plan that is right for you.

Consider How Much You Want to Spend on Dental Insurance

One of the first things that you should consider when choosing a dental insurance plan is how much you would like to spend.   You should make sure to include all the costs associated with your dental care for the year.  This includes the price of the premium as well as copays that may apply.  It’s important to remember here that a plan with a lower premium may result in you spending more throughout the year on your dental costs.  You should consider how much it will cost you in total for the year between insurance fees and costs paid to the dentist's office.

Consider Which Services You Want Your Dental Plan to Cover

While some people are fine with a dental plan that covers only preventative care, others may want an insurance plan that covers both basic and major restorative care as well.  If it is pertinent to your situation, you may also want to consider a plan that includes orthodontia care.  The key here is to decide on the services that you are most likely to need and find a balance between these services and the cost of the plan.

Consider If You Can Continue to See Your Current Dentist

It can sometimes be difficult to find a dentist that you like, and if you have, you want to ensure that your new dental insurance plan will allow you to continue to see them.  Dental HMO and PPO plans allow you to choose only dentists from a preferred network, so you’ll want to make sure your dentist is included in that network.  There are exceptions which include PPO plans that allow you to go to any dentist with a process for reimbursement.  However, the better rate is achieved when using the network.  There are also dental indemnity plans available, which do not require that your dentist is in-network.  However, these monthly premiums can also be a bit higher.

If you are willing to change practices or are searching for a new dentist, you should simply make sure that the dental plan you choose is accepted by a few reputable dentists in your area so you can choose a new practice.
